Uterus and ovaries (Latin)

Uterus and ovaries (Latin)

A cross-section of the ovarium is shown on the right, with the folliculi ovarici in different stages of maturation. When a folliculus has matured, it undergoes ovulation and releases an ovum into the tuba uterina. Each tuba uterina is made up of 4 parts - the infundibulum, ampulla (where ova are usually fertilized), isthmus and the pars uterina. The uterus has 3 layers - the endometrium, myometrium, and perimetrium. The uterus, tubae uterinae and ovaria are supported by various ligaments, including the lig. uterosacrale inferiorly, lig. propium ovarii laterally, lig. suspensorium and lig. latum uteri. The most prominent of them is the lig. latum uteri, which is subdivided into 3 components - the mesometrium, mesosalpinx and mesovarium.
