Temporomandibular joint: overview (Latin)

Temporomandibular joint: overview (Latin)

Part of the ramus mandibulae and arcus zygomaticus have been removed to expose the fossa infratemporalis, where two mm. masticatorii are located: the m. pterygoideus medialis and m. pterygoideus lateralis. In addition, three major ligaments are associated with this joint. The lig. temporomandibulare laterale is a thickening of the joint capsule and strengthens it laterally. The lig. sphenomandibulare is located medial to the joint, running from the spina ossis sphenoidei to the lingula mandibulae on the medial side of the ramus mandibulae. The lig. stylomandibulare passes from the processus styloideus ossis temporalis to the posterior margin and angulus mandibulae.
