Scapula: Anterior view (Latin)

The scapula is a triangular bone with three borders (margo superior, margo lateralis and margo medialis) and three angles (angulus superior, angulus inferior and angulus lateralis).The facies costalis scapulae leans against the 2nd–7th ribs on the posterolateral aspect of the thorax, and is therefore also known as the facies costalis scapulae. The majority of the concave facies costalis scapulae is occupied by the large fossa subscapularis, which provides an attachment point for the m. subscapularis. The margo superior scapulae is marked by a bony indentation known as the incisura scapulae. The incisura scapulae allows for the passage of the n. suprascapularis and therefore may also be referred to as the incisura superior scapulae. Protruding from the margo superior scapulae is the hook-like projection known as the processus coracoideus. This structure allows for the attachment of various muscles and ligaments. The margo lateralis scapulae contains the collum scapulae, which extends to form the fossa glenoidea. The shallow fossa glenoidea articulates with the caput humeri to form the highly dynamic but resultantly unstable art. glenohumeralis. Superior and inferior to the fossa glenoidea are the tubercula supraglenoideum and infraglenoideum, respectively. These act as important attachment points for the caput longum musculi bicipitis brachii and caput longum musculi tricipitis brachii.
