Pharyngeal mucosa (Latin)

Pharyngeal mucosa (Latin)

In this image, the pharynx was cut open and we are looking at it from behind. The nasopharynx is located behind the posterior apertures of the nasal cavity (choanae) and above the level of the palatum molle. The roof of the nasopharynx is formed by the base of the skull (cranium). The nasopharynx is continuous inferiorly with the oropharynx which is located inferior to the level of the palatum molle and superior to the upper margin of the epiglottis. The oropharynx communicates anteriorly with the cavitas oris and is continuous inferiorly with the laryngopharynx. This last part of the pharynx extends from the superior margin of the epiglottis to the top of the oesophagus. The laryngopharynx communicates anteriorly with the larynx through the aditus laryngis.
