Muscles of the tongue: sagittal section (Latin)

Muscles of the tongue: sagittal section (Latin)

The attachment points of the extrinsic muscles are especially visible in this image. The m. genioglossus originates from the spina mentalis superior mandibulae; its triangular shape inserts along the entire length of the tongue as well as the corpus ossis hyoidei. The m. styloglossus originates from the processus styloideus ossis temporalis; its longitudinal fibers blend with the m. longitudinalis inferior while its oblique fibers decussate with those of the m. hyoglossus which extends from the corpus/cornu major ossis hyoidei of the hyoid bone. Finally, the m. palatoglossus muscle can be identified arising from tissues of the soft palate (palatum molle) extending towards the tongue, forming the wall of the arcus palatoglossus.
