Joelho direito, cápsula removida. Os ligamentos cruzados do joelho se estendem entre a fossa intercondilar do fêmur e as áreas intercondilares da tíbia, cruzando um ao outro para formar um "X" (daí o nome "cruzados"). O ligamento cruzado posterior é menor, mais espesso e mais forte do que o anterior. Ambos agem estabilizando a articulação do joelho, pois resistem à translação do fêmur sobre a tíbia e dificultam a hiperflexão/hiperextensão.
