Liene Znotina

Knee joint: Extracapsular ligaments and popliteus muscle (posterior view) (Latin)

Knee joint: Extracapsular ligaments and popliteus muscle (posterior view) (Latin)

Right knee, capsule in situ. The capsula articularis extends posteriorly between the linea intercondylaris femoris to the margo posterior of the planum tibiae. It strengthened posteriorly by the lig. popliteum arcuatum and lig. popliteum obliquum, medially by the lig. collaterale tibiae and laterally by the lig. collaterale fibulare. The m. popliteus provides additional stabilization to the art. genus as it ascends superolaterally across its posterior aspect. The tendo m. poplitei enters the lateral part of the capsula articularis, deep to the lig. popliteum arcuatum, therefore making it an intracapsular structure.
