O nervo glossofaríngeo (NC IX) possui fibras motoras do núcleo salivatório inferior (fibras eferentes viscerais gerais) e do núcleo ambíguo (fibras eferentes somáticas gerais), além de fibras sensitivas do núcleo trigeminal espinal (fibras aferentes somáticas gerais) e do núcleo solitário (fibras aferentes viscerais gerais).O 9º par craniano emerge da superfície lateral do bulbo e deixa o crânio pela parte anterior do forame jugular. Aqui, o nervo glossofaríngeo apresenta seus gânglios sensitivos associados: os gânglios superior e inferior.
