There are several types of landmarks found on the surface of the body. These include landmarks which correspond to the bones and soft tissue, as well as external organs of the body. This illustration summarizes the most important landmarks seen on the anterior view of the body. The major bony landmarks (superior to inferior) are the jugular notch of the sternum, clavicle, costal margin, superior anterior iliac spine, and patella. Soft tissue landmarks shown in the illustration include the sternocleidomastoid muscle, deltoid muscle, biceps brachii muscle, umbilicus, and mons pubis. The organs located on the anterior surface of the body are the breast and areolae, as well as the external genital organs. In addition, there are some clinically important areas seen on the anterior surface of the body are the supraclavicular fossa, cubital fossa and the mammillary line.
