Depois de se originar da bifurcação da artéria carótida comum, a artéria carótida externa cursa superiormente ao longo do pescoço, originando ramos que irrigam os músculos, as vísceras e a pele da cabeça, do pescoço e da face. Há oito ramos principais se originando diretamente da artéria carótida externa: as artérias tireóidea superior, faríngea ascendente, lingual, facial, occipital e auricular posterior, bem como dois ramos terminais, as artérias maxilar e temporal superficial. A imagem superior mostra as três partes da artéria maxilar e os seus ramos, que irrigam muitas estruturas da face, orelha, crânio, meninges, cavidade oral e orofaringe.
