Tal como el ligamento colateral medial, el ligamento colateral lateral es un potente ligamento compuesto que refuerza el aspecto lateral de la articulación del tobillo. El ligamento tiene inserción proximal en la fíbula y una inserción distal en el talus y el calcáneo. El ligamento colateral lateral se compone de tres bandas distintas: los ligamentos talofibular anterior y talofibular posterior, extendidos entre la fíbula y el talus y el ligamento calcaneofibular, el cual se extiende entre la fíbula y el calcáneo.
