Universal Numbering System (permanent teeth) (English)

Universal Numbering System (permanent teeth) (English)

Although referred to as the universal numbering system, this notation is mostly used within the United States only, and is therefore also known as the American/ADA system (American Dental Association). For the permanent dentition, the numbers 1-32 are used where the maxillary right third molar is number ‘1’. The numbers then run sequentially along the maxillary dental arch with the maxillary left third molar numbered as tooth 16. The sequence continues onto the mandibular dental arch, beginning with the mandibular left third molar which receives the number 17; the numbers continue along the mandibular arch until the mandibular right third molar (tooth 32).
