O nervo óptico (NC II) é um nervo sensitivo que transmite os impulsos visuais do olho até o cérebro. O nervo troclear (NC IV) e o nervo abducente (NC VI) entram na órbita através da fissura orbital superior e inervam os músculos extraoculares. O gânglio ciliar é um dos quatro gânglios parassimpáticos da cabeça e recebe fibras pré-ganglionares parassimpáticas do núcleo de Edinger-Westphal através do nervo oculomotor (NC III). Ele inerva os músculos ciliar e esfíncter da pupila através dos nervos ciliares curtos, que transportam fibras parassimpáticas, simpáticas e sensitivas, que também passam pelo gânglio.
