Muscles of the tongue: coronal section (Latin)

Muscles of the tongue: coronal section (Latin)

In this image you can identify each of the 8 paired musculi linguae, which are separated left from right by a median septum linguae. The intrinsic muscles (m. longitudinalis superior, m. longitudinalis inferior, m. verticalis and m. transversus) are confined within the core of the tongue. They are flanked on either side by the m. styloglossus, m. hyoglossus and m. palatoglossus which enter the side of the tongue, decussating with each other as well as the m. longitudinalis inferior linguae. The m. genioglossus is located medially on either side of the septum linguae. The n. hypoglossus (CN XII), which innervates most of the muscles of the tongue, is also shown in this image.
