Muscles of mastication (English)

The muscles of mastication originate from different bones of the skull and insert into the mandible. Temporalis muscle is located in the temporal fossa. Masseter muscle can be found on the face, superficial to the lateral surface of the ramus of the mandible. This muscle has a superficial and a deep layer. The medial and lateral pterygoids are found in the infratemporal fossa. Each muscle consists of two heads. The medial pterygoid has a deep and a superficial head, while the lateral pterygoid has a superior and an inferior head.
