Hypothalamohypophyseal tract (Latin)

Hypothalamohypophyseal tract (Latin)

The main neural pathway between the hypothalamus and the glandula pituitaria is the tractus hypothalamohypophysis (composed of the tractus supraopticohypophysialis/paraventriculohypophysialis), which is a collection of axons that connect the ncl. supraopticus/paraventricularis hypothalami with the neurohypophysis. Its function is to carry the neurohormones oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone to the neurohypophysis, where they are stored and released when needed. Hormones produced or released by the neurohypophysis are carried via vv. hypophysiales to the sinus cavernosus and onwards through the systemic circulation.
