Hyoid bone (Latin)

Hyoid bone (Latin)

Anterior view of the regio cervicalis with the larynx and the trachea visible. The magnified illustration depicts the structure and bony landmarks of the os hyoideum. It consists of three parts: A rectangular corpus ossis hyoidei with two cornua minora and two cornua majora protruding from it. The illustration below shows the in situ position of the os hyoideum, anterior to the epiglottis and superior to the cartilago thyroidea of the larynx. The os hyoideum is connected to the cartilago thyroidea via the membrana thyrohyoidea. The ligamentum stylohyoideum and musculus stylohyoideus (not depicted) connect the os hyoideum to the processus styloideus of the os temporale (not shown).
