Vagus nerve: lower cervical and thoracoabdominal parts (Latin)

The n. laryngeus superior terminates via a r. internus (which carries sensory information from the pars supraglottica laryngis and epiglottis), and a r. externus (which innervates the m. cricothyroideus). The n. vagus descends through the anterior triangle of the neck (trigonum anterius colli) in the carotid sheath (vagina carotidis), travelling posterolateral to the a. carotis interna/communis where rr. cardiaci cervicales superiores/inferiores are given off carrying GVE (parasympathetic) to and GVA (reflex) fibers from the plexus cardiacus. At the root of the neck, the n. vagus then passes in front of each a. subclavia to enter the thorax, after which the n. vagus dexter/sinister follow asymmetric courses. On the right side, the n. laryngeus recurrens dexter loops under the a. subclavia dextra, while it’s counterpart on the left courses under the arcus aortae before ascending through the neck. Both nerves innervate the mm. interni laryngis (except m. cricothyroid) as well as the mucosa of the pars infraglottica laryngis and trachea. In the thorax, the n. vagus also gives rise to rr. cardiaci thoracici, rr. bronchiales and rr. oesophagei which, . together with branches of the truncus sympathicus form the plexus cardiacus/pulmonalis (not shown) and oesophageus, respectively.The nervi vagi dexter et sinister, after contributing to the plexus oesophageus, re-form and continue into the abdomen as the truncus vagalis posterior and truncus vagalis anterior respectively. The truncus vagalis posterior gives rise to the rami gastrici posteriores, most of the fibers of the plexus coeliacus/pancreaticus/splenicus/renalis/suprarenalis (not shown) intermesentericus, and the rami intestini nervi vagi. The truncus vagalis anterior gives off the rami gastrici anteriores and the rami hepatici which contributes to the plexus hepaticus, but not the ganglion mesentericum superius which contains sympathetic fibers.
