Triangles of the neck (Latin)
Triangles of the neck (Latin)
The midline of the neck divides the anterolateral neck region into two symmetrical halves. On each side there is a trigonum anterius and a trigonum posterius, separated by the m. sternocleidomastoideus. The trigonum anterius colli stretches from the midline of the neck anteriorly to the m. sternocleidomastoideus posteriorly and its superior border is the corpus mandibulae. It is further subdivided into four smaller triangles: the trigona submandibulare, submentale, caroticum and musculare. The trigonum posterius colli is bordered by the m. sternocleidomastoideus anteriorly, the m. trapezius posteriorly and the clavicula inferiorly. The venter inferior musculi omohyoidei passes through and further divides it into a smaller trigonum omoclaviculare and a larger trigonum occipitale.
