Triangles of the neck (English)
Triangles of the neck (English)
The midline of the neck divides the anterolateral neck region into two symmetrical halves. On each side there is an anterior and a posterior triangle, separated by the sternocleidomastoid muscle. The anterior triangle stretches from the midline of the neck anteriorly to the sternocleidomastoid muscle posteriorly and its superior border is the body of the mandible. It is further subdivided into four smaller triangles: the submandibular, submental, carotid and muscular triangles. The posterior triangle is bordered by the sternocleidomastoid muscle anteriorly, the trapezius muscle posteriorly and the clavicle inferiorly. The inferior belly of the omohyoid muscle passes through and further divides it into a smaller omoclavicular and a larger occipital triangle.
