Tibia (Latin)
Tibia (Latin)
The tibia articulates proximally at the knee joint (articulatio genus) with the distal end of the femur which rests upon the planum tibiae, formed by the condyli medialis/lateralis tibiae. The tuberositas tibiae is a large roughened prominence on the anterior proximal tibia which serves as the attachment point for the lig. patellare (and indirectly for the tendo m. quadricipitis femoris). The corpus, or shaft, of the tibia has three surfaces (facies medialis/lateralis/posterior) which are separated by three borders ( margo anterior/interossea/medialis). The facies posterior tibiae bears a ridge known as the linea musculi solei which gives attachment to the m. soleus. The distal end of the tibia bears a projection known as the malleolus medialis which articulates with the corpus tali; its medial surface can be palpated as the medial ‘knob’ of the ankle.
