Structure of the tongue (Latin)
In this overview image, the three main parts of the tongue are illustrated: The apex lingua lies most anteriorly. The corpus linguae is divided into two hemispheres by the sulcus medianus linguae and contains numerous papillae linguae. It has a rough dorsal (superior) and a smooth ventral (inferior) surface. The radix linguae with the tonsilla lingualis is located posteriorly. Just anterior to it lies the foramen cecum, an embryological remnant of the ductus thyroglossus. The epiglottis is located posteriorly to the radix linguae and the tonsillae palatinae laterally.
