Structure of the penis (Latin)

The root (radix) forms the fixed or anchored portion of the penis, while the body(corpus) and glans forms the free, pendulous part (pars pendulans penis). The bulbus penis, which consists of the proximal portion of corpus spongiosum, lies firmly anchored to the membrana perinei/corpus perinale, while the crura penis are fixed to the rami ischiopubici of the cingulum pelvicum/ossa coxae. The penis is further stabilized by the lig. suspensorium and lig. fundiforme which are not seen in this image. Enveloping the bulbus and crura penis is the m. bulbospongiosus (removed) and m. ischiocavernosus. These muscles aid in emptying the urethra and stabilizing the erect penis. Surrounding the structure of the penis and erectile tissues is the fascia profunda and fascia superficialis/tela subcutanea penis. The fascia profunda penis lies just superficial to the tunica albuginea penis and surrounds all three erectile tissues. As its name suggests, the fascia superficialis is located most superficially and is continuous with fascia superficialis/tela subcutanea perine (Colles’ fascia).
