Skull (posterior view) (Latin)
Skull (posterior view) (Latin)
The posterior view is mostly occupied by the squama occipitalis and the posterior aspect of the os parietale. The two ossa parietalia meet in the midline and form the sutura sagittalis. Each os parietale also articulates with the os occipitale to form the sutura lambdoidea. The main features of the os occipitale are visible on this view, primarily the Linea nuchalis suprema, superior and inferior, the protuberantia occipitalis externa and the condylus occipitalis. The rest of the posterior skull is occupied by the posterior aspects of the maxillae and mandible, and parts of the os palatinum and os sphenoidale.
