Heart: Left ventricle (Latin)

The ventriculus sinister has noticeably thicker muscular walls which facilitate the generation of sufficient force to overcome the higher blood systemic pressure of the aorta. Similar to its right counterpart, the internal structure of the ventricle features notable muscular ridges, known as trabeculae carneae. The valva atrioventricularis sinistra (a.k.a. valva mitralis) has two leaflets, anterior and posterior. Each of these are connected to a corresponding superior (a.k.a. anterior) and inferior (a.k.a. posterior) m. papillaris via chordae tendineae. A small conical projection of the atrium sinistrum, known as the auricula sinistra cordis (or left atrial appendage) can be seen adjacent to the radix trunci pulmonalis. The posterior wall of the atrium sinistrum is also pierced by four vv.pulmonales which carry oxygenated blood from the lungs.
