Esophagus in situ (Latin)

The oesophagus is located posterior to the trachea and anterior to the columna vertebralis. On its course, it is closely associated with several structures, such as aorta thoracica, bronchus principalis sinister, and atrium sinistrum cordis (not visible here). The pars cervicalis oesophagi begins at the pharyngoesophageal junction (junctio pharyngooesophagealis) and ends at the entry into the apertura thoracis superior. The pars thoracica oesophagi travels through the mediastinum superius et posterius inferius. It ends at the hiatus oesophageus where the oesophagus passes through the diaphragma thoracicum. The pars abdominalis oesophagi lies intraperitoneally. It starts where the oesophagus passes through the diaphragma thoracicum and terminates at the ostium cardiale gastris (Junctio oesophagogastrica).
