Clavicle (Latin)

The clavicula is an S-shaped os longum that connects the membrum superius to the truncus resting horizontally between the sternum and the acromion scapulae. It consists of three main parts: the corpus claviculae, extremitas sternalis, and extremitas acromialis. The extremitas sternalis hosts the facies articularis sternalis that articulates with the manubrium sterni, forming the articulatio sternoclavicularis. The extremitas acromialis features the facies articularis acromialis which forms the articulatio acromioclavicularis together with the acromion scapulae. The facies superior of the clavicula is generally smooth and lies just deep to the cutis. In contrast, its facies inferior is rough due to several important bony landmarks (namely attachments). From lateral to medial, the following can be observed: linea trapezoidea (attachment for the trapezoid ligament), tuberculum conoideum (the attachment for ligamentum conoideum), sulcus musculi subclavii (attachment for musculus subclavius), and impressio ligamenti costoclavicularis (attachment for the ligament that binds clavicula to costa prima).
