Arteries of the thoracic wall (Latin)
Arteries of the thoracic wall (Latin)
The main arteries of the thoracic wall are the a. thoracica interna, aa. intercostales anteriores, aa. intercostales posteriores and a. subcostalis. The a. thoracica interna emerges from the a. subclavia, and further branches out as the a. musculophrenica and a. epigastrica superior. The aa. intercostales anteriores are a set of nine arteries that supply the anterior part of the spatia intercostalia between the 1st-10th ribs. The upper six aa. intercostales anteriores arise from the a. thoracica interna, while the rest are branches of the a. musculophrenica. The aa. intercostales posteriores are eleven in number and supply the posterior intercostal spaces. The first 2 arise from the a. intercostalis suprema, while the rest arise from the aorta thoracica. Finally, the a. subcostalis arises from the aorta thoracica and supplies the subcostal region below the 12th rib.
