Arteries of the pancreas, duodenum and spleen (Latin)
Arteries of the pancreas, duodenum and spleen (Latin)
Anterior view with the liver (hepar) retracted and stomach (gaster) removed. The a. pancreaticoduodenalis posterior superior arises as the first branch of the a.gastroduodenalis, while its anterior counterpart arises as the smaller terminal branch of the same vessel. The a. pancreaticoduodenalis anterior inferior and posterior inferior arise from a common branch of the a. mesenterica superior. The aa. pancreaticoduodenales project around the pancreatic neck where they form arterial arcades to supply the caput, collum and processus uncinatus of the pancreas. The duodenum is also supplied by these arteries, and additionally by the a. supraduodenalis (see gallery below). The a. splenica is the longest branch of the truncus coeliacus and runs horizontally towards the splen. It courses along the superior border of the pancreas and supplies the corpus/cauda pancreatis with numerous branches (a. pancreatica dorsalis, a. pancreatica magna, a. caudae pancreatis). Upon reaching the hilum splenis, it divides into 2-3 terminal branches supplying the splen.
