Ankle joint: Medial view (Latin)
Ankle joint: Medial view (Latin)
Considering its role in bearing the entire weight of the body, it is not surprising that the art. talocruralis (ankle joint) has quite a few ligaments that stabilize it during movement. The ligaments are divided into two groups: the lig. collaterale mediale and lig. collaterale laterale. The lig. collaterale mediale, also known as the lig. deltoideum, is a strong band that reinforces the medial aspect of the joint and prevents dislocations of the ankle joint. The ligament has a proximal attachment on the malleolus medialis of the tibia, and fans out from there to insert onto the os naviculare, calcaneus, and talus. Consequently, the lig. collaterale mediale consists of 4 parts: the lig. tibionaviculare, extending from the tibia to the os naviculare, the lig. calcaneotibiale stretching from the tibia to the calcaneus, and lig. talotibiale anterius and posterius, extending from the tibia to the talus.
