Nerves of face and scalp (Anterior view: deep) (Latin)
The sensory innervation to the face and scalp arises from the n. trigeminus (CN V) (not visible). The n. trigeminus divides to give off three branches (n. ophthalmicus (V1), n. maxillaris (V2) and n. mandibularis (V3)) which supply sensory innervation to corresponding regions of the face and scalp. The n. ophthalmicus (CN V1) gives off the n. supraorbitalis, n. supratrochlearis, r. nasalis externus nervi ethmoidalis anterioris (see previous image) and n. infratrochlearis to innervate the area from the anterior scalp down to the upper eyelid. The n. maxillaris (CN V2) gives off the n. infraorbitalis, n. zygomaticofacialis and n. zygomaticotemporalis to supply the area from the lower eyelid to the labium superius oris. The n. mandibularis (CN V3) gives off the n. auriculotemporalis, n. buccalis and n. mentalis to innervate the labium inferius oris, mentum and jaw.
