Kidney structure (English)
The internal structure (parenchyma) of the kidney consists of the outer renal cortex and inner renal medulla which is characterized by renal pyramids. The pyramids are separated by extensions of the cortex known as renal columns. The apices of the pyramids project medially toward the renal sinus where they open into several minor calyces that unite to form a major calyx. Usually, there are two to three major calyces in the kidney (superior, middle, and inferior), which unite to form the renal pelvis. The renal pelvis gives off a single ureter that leaves the kidney via the hilum.
