Innervation of the small intestine (English)
Innervation of the small intestine (English)
Overview of the abdomen with the liver reflected, and parts of the stomach, pancreas and large intestine removed. The greater and lesser thoracic splanchnic nerves transmit preganglionic sympathetic fibers from the thoracolumbar spinal cord to the celiac, aorticorenal and superior mesenteric ganglia, where they synapse. Sympathetic innervation is inhibitory to the musculature of the small intestine and vasoconstrictor to its vasculature.Parasympathetic information is provided by the anterior and posterior vagal trunks via the same ganglia (however do not synapse here). From these ganglia, sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve fibers are distributed via periarterial plexuses to the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. Parasympathetic innervation is secretomotor to the mucosa of the small intestine and motor to its musculature. Visceral afferent fibers from the small intestine travel within both the thoracic splanchnic and vagus nerves.
