Hip bone (lateral view) (Latin)

The superior part of this lateral view of the hip bone shows the facies externa/glutea ossis ilii. It is marked by three elevations (the lineae gluteae anterior, posterior et inferior) which mark the boundaries between attachment sites for the mm. glutei. The most superior aspect of the os ilium forms a well defined rim called the crista iliaca, which extends between the spina iliaca anterior superior and spina iliaca anterior posterior. The spina iliaca anterior superior provides the lateral attachment for the lig. inguinale. Just inferior to the spinae iliacae superiores we can find their inferior counterparts, the spina iliaca anterior inferior and spina iliaca posterior inferior. The lateral view also presents a cup-shaped cavity known as the acetabulum, in which the os coxae articulates with the femur at the articulatio coxae. Four main elements of the acetabulum can be identified: the margo acetabuli, fossa acetabuli, facies lunata and incisura acetabuli. Also seen is a large bony aperture known as the foramen obturatum; this is closed by the membrana obturatoria, except for a small opening (canal) which gives passage to the a./v. obturatoria and n. obturatorius from the pelvis into the compartimentum mediale femoris.
