Coronal section of the brain (thalamus level): White matter structures (English)

The largest collection of white matter fibers in the human brain is the corpus callosum. The body of corpus callosum is seen on this coronal section inferior to the cingulate gyrus. Further below at the center of the illustration is a cross section of the body of fornix, running between the two thalami. Lateral to each thalamus is a large bundle of white matter called the internal capsule, separating the thalamus from the basal ganglia. Between the putamen and the claustrum is a smaller bundle of white matter called the external capsule. Lastly, the most lateral bundle is the extreme capsule, found between the claustrum and the insular lobe.
