Nerves of the esophagus (Latin)

The plexus oesophageus, a network of parasympathetic and sympathetic fibers surrounds the esophagus and provides the nervous supply. The parasympathetic nervous supply mainly originates from the nervus vagus (CN X), while the sympathetic supply stems from the ganglia cervicalia et thoracica of truncus sympathicus, as well as nervi spinales T5-T12. Plexus myentericus and plexus submucosus (enteric nervous system; not pictured) are embedded in the esophageal wall and play an important role in controlling the peristalsis of the esophagus.
