Myotomes of the lower limb (Latin)
Myotomes of the lower limb (Latin)
Most joint movements in the lower limb are produced by more than one myotome. Flexion of the hip (coxa) is controlled by L2 and L3 while hip extension is controlled by L4 and L5. The dorsal root of the L5 and S1 spinal nerves (nervi spinales) are responsible for hip abduction, while L1, L2 and L3 produce hip adduction. External rotation of the hip joint (articulatio coxae) is controlled by L5 and S1, whereas L1, L2 and L3 control internal rotation at the hip joint.Flexion of the knee (genu) is produced by L5 and S1, while knee extension is produced by L3 and L4. The L4 and L5 myotomes are responsible for dorsiflexion at the ankle joint (articulatio talocruralis), with plantarflexion controlled by the S1 and S2 myotomes. At the articulationes metatarsophalangeae (MTP) et interphalangeae (IP) pedis, L5 and S1 are responsible for dorsiflexion, while S1 and S2 control plantarflexion. Eversion of the foot at the subtalar joint (articulatio subtalaris) is by L5 and S1 myotomes whereas L4 and L5 are responsible for inversion.
