Lymphatic system (Latin)
Lymphatic system (Latin)
The systema lymphatica is formed from a network of vasa lymphatica, lymphoid tissues (textus lymphoidei) and organa lymphoidea. The two main lymphatic collecting vessels are the ductus lymphaticus dexter and the ductus thoracicus. The ductus lymphaticus dexter drains lymph from the right arm and the right side of the head and thorax, while the ductus thoracicus drains the rest of the body and houses the cisterna chyli. Nodi lymphoidei are scattered throughout the body, the most important ones to learn are the; nodi lymphoidei colli, nodi axillares and nodi inguinales. Lastly we have the organa lymphoidea, namely the splen, thymus, peyer’s patches (noduli lymphoidei aggregati) and the tonsillae (palatina, pharyngea, lingualis and tubaria). Collectively the tonsils, peyer’s patches and the appendix are referred to as MALT; the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue.
