Innervation of the small intestine (Latin)
Innervation of the small intestine (Latin)
Overview of the abdomen with the liver reflected, and parts of the stomach (gaster), pancreas and large intestine (intestinum crassum) removed. The nn. splanchnici thoracici majores et minores transmit preganglionic sympathetic fibers from the thoracolumbar spinal cord to the ggll. coeliaca, aorticorenalia et mesentericum superius, where they synapse. Sympathetic innervation is inhibitory to the musculature of the small intestine (intestinum tenue) and vasoconstrictor to its vasculature.Parasympathetic information is provided by the trunci vagales anterior et posterior via the same ganglia (however they do not synapse here). From these ganglia, sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve fibers are distributed via periarterial plexuses to the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. Parasympathetic innervation is secretomotor to the mucosa of the small intestine and motor to its musculature. Visceral afferent fibers from the small intestine travel within both the thoracic splanchnic and vagus nerves.
