Glossopharyngeal nerve (origin and proximal branches) (Latin)
The nervus glossopharyngeus (CN IX) carries motor fibers from the nucleus salivatorius inferior (general visceral efferent) and nucleus ambiguus (general somatic efferent fibers), and sensory fibers from the nucleus spinalis nervi trigemini (general somatic afferent) and nucleus tractus solitarii (general visceral sensory). The CN IX emerges from the lateral aspect of the rostral medulla and leaves the skull via the anterior part of the foramen jugulare. Here, the CN IX bears its associated sensory ganglia: ganglion superius et inferius.
