Calvaria (Latin)
Calvaria (Latin)
The superior surface features the sutures that connect the bones of the calvaria: sutura sagittalis, coronalis and lambdoidea. Each os parietale contains a foramen parietale that forms a channel for the vena emissaria. The most prominent feature on the inferior view of the calvaria called the sulcus sinus sagittalis superioris can be seen right in the middle. Anteriorly, the edges of this sulcus unite to form a bony ridge called the crista frontalis. On either side of the sulcus sinus sagittalis superioris there are several round pits called the foveolae granulares, which house the granulationes arachnoideae. Moving further laterally, there are many branching grooves, called sulci arteriosi, in which the arteriae meningeae course.
