Arteries of the brain - Lateral view (English)
Arteries of the brain - Lateral view (English)
Lateral view of the brain with its arterial vessels; the lateral sulcus has been opened to expose the arteries within. The prominent vessel seen from this view is the middle cerebral artery (MCA), which is the direct continuation of the internal carotid artery. It provides a large number of small central branches (e.g. anterolateral central arteries) as well as several larger cortical branches such as the lateral orbitofrontal artery, insular arteries (not shown) as well as several additional temporal, frontal and parietal cortical branches. The cortical branches of the MCA supply most of the lateral surface of the frontal, parietal and temporal lobes (except for the superior border of the former two and inferior border of the latter). Smaller central branches supply the basal ganglia and internal capsule.
