Universal Numbering System (permanent teeth) (Latin)
Universal Numbering System (permanent teeth) (Latin)
Although referred to as the universal numbering system, this notation is mostly used within the United States only, and is therefore also known as the American/ADA system (American Dental Association). For the permanent dentition, the numbers 1-32 are used where the dens molaris tertius dexter maxillaris is number ‘1’. The numbers then run sequentially along the arcus dentalis maxillaris with the dens molaris tertius sinister maxillaris numbered as tooth 16. The sequence continues onto the arcus dental mandibularis, beginning with the dens molaris tertius sinister mandibularis which receives the number 17; the numbers continue along the arcus dentalis mandibularis until the dens molaris tertius dexter mandibularis (tooth 32).
