Pancreas in situ (Latin)
Pancreas in situ (Latin)
The pancreas is an elongated organ which lies mainly retroperitoneally across the posterior abdominal wall. It can be divided into five anatomical parts: caput, processus uncinatus, collum, corpus and cauda pancreatis. The descending and horizontal parts of the C-shaped duodenum wrap around the caput pancreatis. The aorta abdominalis, a. mesenterica superior, a. renalis sinistra, ren sinistra, and glandula suprarenalis sinistra are situated posterior to the corpus pancreatitis. The cauda is the last part of the pancreas and lies intraperitoneally. It is situated in close proximity to the hilum of the spleen (hilum splenis) and runs with the splenic vessels in the splenorenal ligament (ligamentum splenorenale).
