Muscles of the hip and thigh (Posterior view) (Latin)
The muscles of the regio glutea are divided into superficial and deep groups. The mm. glutei superficiales include the large m. gluteus maximus as well as the m. gluteus medius and m. gluteus minimus; the m. tensor fascia latae which is positioned laterally. The mm. glutei superficiales collectively contribute to extension, internal and external rotation and abduction and adduction of the femur at the art. coxae. The mm. glutei profundi are located beneath the mm. glutei superficiales and include the m. piriformis, m. gemellus superior, m. obturator internus, m. gemellus inferior, m. obturator externus, and m. quadratus femoris. The mm. glutei profundi function to externally rotate and abduct the femur at the art. coxae whilst also contributing to stabilization of the caput ossis femoris with the acetabulum. The mm. posteriores femoris are also known as the m. ischiocrurales, or more commonly, the hamstring muscles. They include: the m. biceps femoris, m.semimembranosus and m. semitendinosus. The m. ischiocrurales work together to extend the femur, flex the art. genus and stabilize the art. coxae.
