Muscles of the hip and thigh (Anterior view) (Latin)
From this anterior perspective the m. iliopsoas as well as the musculi compartimenti anterioris/medialis can be identified. The m. iliopsoas group consists of the m. iliacus, m. psoas major, and m. psoas minor which function to flex the trunk and thigh at the art. coxae. The m. quadriceps femoris forms the great anterior muscle of the femur. It consists of four parts: the m. vastus lateralis, m. vastus intermedius, m. vastus medialis, and m. rectus femoris. The m. quadriceps femoris is a powerful extensor of the knee (genu). The m. rectus femoris of this group also works together with the m. sartorius of the anterior thigh to produce flexion of the thigh at the art. coxae. The mm. mediales femoris mainly function to adduct the thigh at the art. coxae. Muscles of this region include the m. gracilis, m. pectineus, m. adductor longus, m. adductor brevis and m. adductor magnus. This group of muscles may also be known as the mm. adductores. The m. obturator externus is also classified as a member of the compartimentum medialis femoris due to its innervation by n. obturatorius, however, is often grouped with the other lateral rotators of the hip joint (mm. glutei profundi) due to its shared function with these muscles.
