Kidney structure (Latin)
The internal structure (parenchyma) of the kidney (ren) consists of the outer renal cortex renis and inner medulla renis which is characterized by thepyramides renales. These are separated by extensions of the cortex known as columnae renales. The apices of the pyramides renales project medially toward the sinus renalis where they open into several calices minores that unite to form a calix major. Usually, there are two to three calices majores in the kidney (superius, medius, and inferius), which again unite to form the pelvis renalis. The pelvis renalis gives off a single ureter that leaves the kidney via the hilum.
