Inferior base of the skull - Landmarks - Colored (Latin)
The facies externa of the os occipitale is defined by several well defined ridges and crests, namely the crista occipitalis externa as well as the lineae nuchales superior et inferior. Also visible are the condyli occipitales, which articulate with the atlas (vertebra cervicalis C1). The os temporale presents more prominent landmarks compared to its posterior neighbor, the largest of which being the processus mastoideus, styloideus et zygomaticus. Important landmarks of the os sphenoidale from this perspective include processus pterygoideus (located centrally); this is formed of a lamina medialis et lateralis, the former of which bears a hooked shaped extremity known as the hamulus pterygoideus. The laminae horizontales of the ossa palatini along with the processus palatinae of the maxillae form the palatum durum.
