Hypothalamohypophyseal tract (English)
Hypothalamohypophyseal tract (English)
The main neural pathway between the hypothalamus and the pituitary is the hypothalamohypophyseal tract (composed of the supraopticohypophyseal and paraventriculohypophyseal tracts), which is a collection of axons that connect the supraoptic and paraventricular hypothalamic nuclei with the neurohypophysis. Its function is to carry the neurohormones oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone to the neurohypophysis, where they are stored and released when needed. Hormones produced or released by the pituitary gland are carried via hypophyseal veins to the cavernous sinus and onwards through the systemic circulation.
