Hippocampus and fornix (Latin)
Hippocampus and fornix (Latin)
In this illustration, a transverse section of the lobus temporalis sinister and lobus occipitalis sinister has been made in order to reveal the formatio hippocampi and the fornix. In addition, the left part of the diencephalon has been removed as well as the rest of the hemispherium cerebri. In this view, the formatio hippocampi and the fornix are visible throughout their whole length. The formatio hippocampi is a prominent C-shaped structure bulging in the floor of cornu temporalis of the ventriculus lateralis. It is widest at its anterior extent where it bends toward the medial aspect of the encephalon. The fornix is situated on both sides of the medial aspects of the hemispherium cerebri and extends from the hippocampus to the corpora mammillaria hypothalami. The fornix is comprised of several parts: columnae (anteriorly), a corpus (midline portion suspended from the corpus callosum by the septum pellucidum), the crura (posterior portion), alveus and fimbriae.
